On developing and scanning film

Fri Sep 19, 2008, 1:06 PM
I've been experimenting with scanning film for a few days - since I got my scanner in fact. One thing I've noted is that the effective resolution in MPs of a negative is fairly low - in the area of 6-10 MP depending on ISO speed.

[link] is a test picture shot on T-Max 100. The effective resolution of T-Max 100 seems to be 10 MP tops, that scan is about 35 MP (though that picture was shot at f/11 so slight diffraction would also degrade quality) so it looks very blurry - but reducing the size to screen-size shows that it has more than plenty detail to print even 20x30 from that file.

Another effect is the lens and camera, the Yashica I used for that picture has a light-leak problem, and the lens is only average when it comes to sharpness.
In fact the light leak is so much in fact that to get proper contrast in that picture I had to multiply the image with itself in PS.

I've yet to develop a roll of T-Max 100 from my EOS 1N, but I expect the results to be quite excellent, especially the tripod shots I did last weekend.

I put up a LOT of scanned pictures at [link] , take a look if you're bored.
